On September 6, 2017, Texas resident Preeti Desai discovered this “fanged mystery creature” on the beach in Texas City, Texas, on Galveston Bay 42 miles southeast of Houston. Desai took photos and posted them on “biology twitter” asking for identity help. One reply was from Kenneth Tighe, Ph.D., who suggests it is a fangtooth snake-eel or conger eel. “All three of those species occur off Texas and have large, fang-like teeth.” Twitter image by Preeti Desai.
